Dear Pen Pal,

Hi there! My name is Jamie and I'm 10 years old. I live in a small town in China called Xizhou. I was really excited when my teacher told our class that we would each get an American pen pal to write letters to. I've never had a pen pal before, so this is going to be a lot of fun!

I can't wait to learn all about you and where you live. China is really big, but my town is pretty small. We have around 5,000 people living here. It's right in the middle of the countryside, surrounded by farms and rice fields. The nearest big city is about an hour away by car.

My favorite part about living in Xizhou is that it's so beautiful and peaceful here. We have a few small shops and restaurants, but that's about it. There's not much traffic or noise pollution like in the cities. Instead, we have wide open spaces, fresh air, and gorgeous views of the mountains all around us. On the weekends, my friends and I love to go hiking and exploring in

nature. We pack a picnic lunch and spend the whole day outside running around.

School life here is probably a little different than what you're used to. We start classes at 7:30am and they go until 5pm, with just a short lunch break in the middle. We study subjects like math, Chinese literature, English, science, history, art, and music. Mandarin is the main language spoken in China, but we start learning English in 1st grade. My favorite subjects are art and English - I love being creative and learning about new cultures. Unlike American schools, we don't really have big sports teams or afterschool clubs. Instead, we take special classes after our normal school day ends. I take Chinese yo-yo lessons twice a week. It's kind of like doing tricks with a yo-yo, except the yo-yos are bigger and there are special string movements. I'm not very good at it yet, but I'm practicing hard! I also take piano lessons on Saturdays.

On Sundays, my day is totally free to relax and play. My parents are both farmers, so they have to work in the fields every day. But on Sundays, we'll often go on a family bike ride together or have a picnic by the river if the weather is nice. One of my favorite traditions is when we make zongzi together for the Dragon Boat Festival. Zongzi are sticky rice dumplings stuffed

with different fillings, wrapped up in bamboo leaves. The whole process of soaking the bamboo leaves, mixing the sticky rice, and carefully wrapping everything up is a lot of fun. I'd love to hear what kinds of festivals, holidays, and traditions you have where you live. Are there any special foods you eat for celebrations? What do you like to do for fun in your free time? I'm sure there are lots of differences between our cities, but I bet there are similarities too!

Well, that's probably enough about me for now. I can't wait to get your letter and learn all about your life. Please write back soon!

Your friend, Jamie

Dear Pen Pal,

Hi there! My name is Jamie and I'm 10 years old. I live in a small town called Oakville in the countryside of England. I'm so excited to have a pen pal from America - I can't wait to learn all about where you live!

I thought I'd start by telling you a bit about my family. I live with my mom, dad, and little sister Emily who is 7 years old. We also have a dog named Rufus who is a golden retriever. He's really friendly and loves to play fetch and go for walks in the woods near our house. My dad works in an office in the city but my mom stays home with me and Emily. On the weekends we love going on little adventures together as a family.

Just last weekend we went strawberry picking at a farm about 30 minutes away from our house. They had the most delicious, juicy strawberries! We ended up picking so many that mom made strawberry jam, a strawberry pie, and we even had enough left over to make strawberry milkshakes. My favorite was definitely the milkshakes. What's your favorite strawberry treat? Another fun thing we did recently was visit a castle that's just a few towns over from where we live. We got to explore all the old rooms and dungeons and even got dressed up in costumes from medieval times! Emily and I felt like real princesses. I'll have to send you some photos next time so you can see how silly we looked. Have you ever visited an old castle before?

At school, my favorite subjects are art and reading. We have this cool art teacher named Mr. Davies who lets us get really creative and messy with all kinds of paints, clay, and other

materials. Just last week we learned how to make our own prints using styrofoam plates and it was so much fun! For reading, we just started a new book called The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe which is part of the Chronicles of Narnia series. I'm only a few chapters in but I'm already hooked! I'll let you know how I like the whole book once I finish it.

When I'm not at school, I love being outdoors and active. There's a huge grassy field behind my house where Emily and I have set up a mini obstacle course with hula hoops, jump ropes, and other toys from our backyard. We also really like riding our bikes down quiet country roads and hiking some of the easier trails through the forest. Sometimes we'll pack a picnic lunch to eat outside if the weather is nice. My friends and I are already counting down to summer when we'll be able to do that every day!

I have to run for now, but I'm really looking forward to hearing back from you all about your life in America! What kinds of things do you like to do for fun? What are your favorite subjects in school? Be sure to tell me everything! Talk to you soon! Your friend,

Jamie

Dear Emily,

Hi! It's me, your pen pal Xiaoming from China. I'm so excited to write you this letter and tell you all about my life here. Things are quite different from how you live in America, but I'll do my best to explain it all to you. Get ready for a super long letter! First off, I live in a huge city called Shanghai. It's nothing like the small town you described living in. Everywhere I look there are massive skyscrapers shooting up into the sky. The streets are always crowded with people, cars, buses and motorbikes zipping by. The noise never stops - there's a constant buzz of traffic, people chat

Dear Jessica,

Hi! How are you doing? I'm so excited to finally write to my new pen pal all the way in America! My name is Jia Ming and I'm 9 years old. I live in Shanghai, China with my mom, dad, and little sister Mei Mei who is 6 years old.

Let me tell you all about my family first. My mom works at a big company downtown as an accountant. She has to leave really early in the morning to beat the traffic but then she gets home around 6pm to make us dinner. My dad is a teacher at a middle school nearby. He teaches math which is my favorite subject! Maybe he can give you some extra math worksheets if you ever need them. Haha just kidding! My little sister Mei Mei just started 1st grade this year. She loves drawing and coloring and is always making me pictures. I have to admit some of them are really good!

Now let me tell you about my school and what I like to do for fun. I go to Xingzhi Elementary School which is just a 10 minute walk from my house. We have to wear uniforms which kind of stinks but I've gotten used to it. My favorite classes are math, art, and P.E. I'm really good at math just like my dad. Art class is fun because I love painting and drawing animals. For P.E. we get to play games like basketball, soccer, and run races which I always win!

After school, my favorite thing to do is go to the park nearby and play on the jungle gym or swing on the swings. I'm the fastest runner and best climber out of all my friends. Sometimes we also play basketball, soccer, or just chase each other around.

My parents don't let me watch too much TV or play video games during the week, but on weekends I like playing mobile games on my mom's old phone. My favorite game right now is Pop Balloon but I'm getting kind of bored with it. Do you have any good mobile game recommendations I should try?

On weekends, my family likes going to the movies, museum, or sometimes we take little trips around Shanghai. Two weeks ago we went to the Science and Technology Museum and got to see a tornado machine and walk through a replica coal mine which was so cool! I also really like going to the park near my house and flying a kite. There's this really yummy jianbing (kind of like a crepe) stand in the park that my dad and I always get from after flying kites.

Well I think that's all for my first letter! Make sure to write back and tell me all about your life in America. I'm so curious to learn about where you live, your school, family, and friends. I've never been to America before. Is it a lot different from China? I can't wait to hear back from you! Your new friend, Jia Ming

Dear Pen Pal,

Hi there! My name is Jamie and I'm 10 years old. I live in a big city in China called Shanghai. My teacher Mrs. Wang told our class that we would be getting pen pals from America this year. I was so excited when I found out you were going to be my pen pal!

I can't wait to learn all about you and where you live. China is really different from America in a lot of ways. Like I said, I live in a huge city with over 24 million people! Can you imagine that? The city is always busy with cars, buses, and lots of people walking around. There are tall skyscrapers and buildings everywhere you look.

At night, the streets are so bright from all the neon lights and signs. It's really beautiful! During the day, I hear a ton of honking from cars stuck in traffic jams. My mom has to leave super early for work to avoid the bad traffic. I don't know how people handle sitting in their cars like that every day!

My family lives in an apartment in the city. We're on the 28th floor, so we have an amazing view! I can see the bright lights at night and the skyscrapers stretching out all around our building. Our apartment isn't huge, but it's cozy. My little brother Xiao and

I share a bedroom. We've made it lots of fun by decorating with our favorite games, toys, and posters.

What's your house like? Do you live in a big city too or is it a small town? I've never been to America before, but I've seen pictures and it looks like there's a lot of wide open space with yards and trees around the houses. That must be so nice! Here, there are parks around the city, but not a lot of trees and grass near our apartment.

School is pretty different here too compared to what I've seen on TV shows about America. We have a uniform we have to wear every day - navy blue pants or skirts with white shirts. I kind of like it because it's one less thing to worry about in the morning! Our school day is also really long. We start at 7:30am and don't get dismissed until 5pm most days. We get breaks for lunch and Exercise time, but we spend most of the day in the classroom learning.

Classes here are pretty strict. We have to work really hard because there is a lot of pressure to do well on our exams. My favorite subjects are math, science and art. Math and science make sense to me and I find them interesting. For art class, I love being creative and making paintings or drawings. What are your favorite subjects?

On the weekends, I have a lot of after-school activities I attend. I take Chinese calligraphy lessons, piano lessons, and I'm also on the school's basketball team. We practice every Saturday morning. Calligraphy is the art of beautiful Chinese handwriting and ink brush painting. It's a very traditional art form that I really enjoy learning. Do you have any fun hobbies or sports you play? Some of my other favorite things are reading fantasy novels (I love Harry Potter!), doing puzzles, and eating dumplings. My mom makes the most delicious soup dumplings. You have to be careful when you eat them because the broth inside is super hot! I also really like rice, noodles, buns - basically all kinds of Chinese food. What's your favorite food?

Well, I think I've covered a lot about my life here in Shanghai! I can't wait to hear back from you and learn all about you. Please tell me what it's like where you live, what you like to do for fun, and anything else you want to share. I'm so excited to become pen pals!

Your friend, Jamie

Dear Jessica,

Hi! It's me, your pen pal Xiaoming from China. I'm so excited to write you this letter and tell you all about my life here. I hope you and your family are doing well!

First, let me tell you about my school. I go to Yinghua Elementary School right here in Beijing. We wear really cool uniforms - mine has a white shirt with a red tie and blue pants. I think they look very smart! School starts at 8am and goes until 3:30pm Monday to Friday. We have classes like math, Chinese language, English, science, art, music, and P.E. My favorite subjects are art and P.E. because I love being creative and active. In art class, we get to paint, draw, sculpt with clay - it's awesome! And in P.E., we play all kinds of sports and games like basketball, soccer, jump rope, and my favorite - running races. I'm one of the fastest runners in my grade!

I also really like English class because I get to practice writing and speaking in English, like I'm doing now with this letter. My English teacher is really nice and makes learning fun. We read stories, sing songs, and play language games. I'm trying my best to get better at English so I can communicate well with you and understand everything you write me!

At lunch every day, we get delicious Chinese food in the cafeteria. There's always rice, vegetable dishes, and then a main dish like kung pao chicken, beef and broccoli, or sweet and sour pork. My favorite is the dumplings - I could eat a whole plateful! We use chopsticks to eat our food. Have you ever tried using chopsticks before? It takes a lot of practice, but I'm a pro now after using them my whole life.

After school, I usually have a snack like a rice ball or piece of fruit, and then I work on my homework for a couple hours. Once that's done, I get to relax and have some fun! I love playing outside with my friends - we'll ride our bikes, rollerblade, skip rope, or play basketball, badminton, or jump around at the neighborhood playground. I'm an only child, so my friends are like the brothers and sisters I don't have. We have such a blast together!

In the evenings, my parents like our family to have dinner together. We'll eat more delicious Chinese food, and then we'll watch a show or movie together. I'm obsessed with the Chinese animated comedy \"Ne Zha\" right now - it's about a little boy who is born a powerful god by accident and gets into all kinds of mischievous adventures. It's super funny!

On the weekends, my parents and I love going on little outings around Beijing. We'll go to the park and I'll chase the squirrels while my dad flies a kite. Or we'll check out the latest exhibits at the science museum or go see an acrobat show with intense tumblers and human pyramids. Beijing is such an amazing, historic city with so much to do and see. I feel really lucky to live here!

One of my favorite places is the grounds of the Forbidden City. This was the grand palace for China's emperors hundreds of years ago. It's absolutely massive with tons of temples, pavilions, gardens, and corridors to explore. My parents say it's an important place that represents 5,000 years of Chinese culture, so I need to appreciate its beauty and history. I'll have to take you there if you ever visit Beijing! We could get dressed up like ancient royalty and parade around pretending to be an emperor and empress. Wouldn't that be hilarious?

Well Jessica, I could go on and on, but I don't want this letter to be a billion pages long! I hope you enjoyed learning about my life in Beijing. Please write back soon and tell me all about your life in the United States. What are your favorite subjects in school? What kind of activities do you like to do for fun? What are some of your favorite foods? I can't wait to hear everything!

Your friend, Xiaoming
