My Awesome Winter Vacation Adventure!
Last winter, my family and I went on the coolest vacation ever! We traveled all the way to Hawaii to visit my aunt, uncle, and cousins who live there. I was so excited because I had never been to Hawaii before and I had heard it is a paradise with beautiful beaches, warm sunshine, and lots of fun activities. The journey started with a long flight from our home in California. I don't really like flying because my ears hurt when the plane goes up really high in the sky. But my mom gave me gum to chew which helped pop my ears. The flight attendants also gave me a cool kids' activity pack with games, coloring books, and snacks to keep me entertained. After what felt like forever up in the air, we finally landed in Honolulu!
When we stepped off the plane, the warm Hawaiian air hit my face and it felt so nice compared to the cold winter we left behind. My aunt and uncle were waiting for us with big smiles and flower leis. In Hawaii, they greet you with these pretty necklaces made of fresh flowers. I loved the sweet floral smell! We stayed at my aunt and uncle's house right near the beach in an area called Waikiki. The first evening, we walked along the
beach and I got my first glimpse of the breathtaking ocean view that would become so familiar to me that week. The water was this incredible shadeofturquoise and the waves rolled up gently onto the soft, golden sandy beach. I couldn't wait to get in that water!
The next morning, my cousin Jacob took me and my little brother boogie boarding for the first time. He taught us how to paddle out and catch the smaller waves then ride them back to shore. It was tough at first and I swallowed a ton of salty ocean water. But eventually I got the hang of it and started having a blast bouncing over the waves! We also buried each other in the sand and built a giant sandcastle. The beach was our playground all week.
One day, we went on this awesome boat tour where we sailed along the coast and went snorkeling with the tropical fish. Looking through my mask into the clear turquoise water, I saw so many colorful fish swimming around the coral reefs. It was like being in a real-life aquarium! A green sea turtle even swam right up to me, which was amazing. I also loved when we stopped at this tiny island to go hiking through the forests and up to the top of a mountain for an epic view.
Another highlight was visiting Pearl Harbor and walking onto the USS Arizona Memorial. At the museum, I learned all about the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan during World War 2 and how many brave American soldiers sacrificed their lives. It was very sobering but also inspirational to learn about that piece of history.
We also spent a day at a traditional luau, which is a huge Hawaiian party and feast. There were dancers in grass skirts doing hula dances to the beat of drumming music. We got to sample all kinds of delicious Hawaiian foods, including a whole roasted pig cooked in the ground called kalua pork. My favorite was the poi, which is made from a starchy plant and has the weirdest purple texture. The luau finished with an incredible fire dancing show where the dancers twirled blazing batons and knives. It was awesome and a little scary!
One of my favorite memories though was just hanging out at my aunt and uncle's house with my cousin Chelsea who is my age. We splashed in their pool, played basketball in the driveway, and she even taught me some Hawaiian words and phrases. In the evenings, we'd go back to the beach to watch the gorgeous sunsets. The sky turned brilliant shades of pink, orange, and purple as the sun slipped below the horizon. So pretty!
All too soon, our amazing week in Hawaii came to an end. I was so sad to leave the warm sunshine, sandy beaches, and my aunty and uncle behind. But I have the greatest memories and can't wait to go back someday. Hawaii is like a magical paradise and I'm so lucky I got to experience it! This was definitely the best winter vacation I've ever had.
