As for long-distance holidays, there are some unique destinations that actually offer you great value for your money, even if you’re on a budget.
Tokyo, Japan

For sightseeing there are plenty of free museums and attractions, while tour bus ticket prices start from as little as £ 11.56.

The Chinese capital took third spot with a total basket price of £ 337.49. If you only do one cultural day out during your stay, make it a trip to The Forbidden City. There are some seriously beautiful and delicate buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, not to mention they're home to priceless artificial objects from China's historical milestones.
Dubai, UAE
Although Dubai does have a reputation for being quite the splurge (挥霍金钱) when it comes to holidays and if you’re going to addict yourself to a spot of shopping or hit the roller-coasters, it actually provides quite good value for what you pay. The city also offers some cheaper prices across its museums, galleries and attractions as well as airport transfers. 1.What can you enjoy in Tokyo, Japan? A.Eating out cheap. This past Columbus Day, my husband and I went fishing with some friends on their boat while our 10 and 8-year-olds were in school. We left the house all at the same time, about 7 am. My children walked to and from school every day and we knew they were OK for a couple hours by themselves anyway so we told them to go inside after school and we would be home around 4 pm.
The adults decided to go fishing offshore: we live on the Gulf Coast, since it was a beautiful day in the normally still very humid Texas fall. At around 2 pm we started back to shore and wouldn't you know, we ran out of gas. We were out of cell phone service, even 911 wasn't working, and we didn't have a radio so we were stuck waiting for someone to come by.

Over the past six decades, the now 85-year-old English researcher has
revolutionized the entire field of primatology (灵长类动物学). Goodall was among the first to study her subjects in the wild. She treated chimps as conscious, complex individuals with distinet personalities and surprising behaviors. Goodall argued that chimpanzees were worthy of names, like their human cousins. Her work opened the world's eyes to our closest great chimp relatives. Now, six decades after she began her first round of fieldwork in Tanzania in 1960, that lens (镜头) has finally been turned backward.
An ongoing multimedia exhibition at the National Geographic Museum in Washington D.C.charts the life and career of the world's foremost expert on chimpanzees. It's titled “Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr. Jane Goodall.” The show takes visitors on a journey from her earliest scientific explorations to her current adventures. Goodall's story is told

through a collection of field notes and other personal effects. Her first recorded encounter with a chimpanzee happened at age one. Her father gifted her with a stuffed toy chimp named Jubilee. Goodall kept it close throughout her adult life.
Some of her earliest favorite books included “Tarzan of the Apes” and “The Story of Doctor Dolittle.” When she was a bit older, Goodall spent her free time drawing aimlessly about wild animals. She also physically labeled careful drawings of wild animals with her friends. Goodall was born with this incredible curiosity, incredible bravery and desire to explore the world that was so obvious, even at such an early age. It seemed predestined (注定的) for her to do what she did.
The show hits more somber notes, too. Chimpanzee populations worldwide continue to decrease under the combined threats of illegal hunting, habitat destruction and disease. Researchers and conservationists-Goodall among them-are fighting to rescue them from decreasing. At 85 years old, she still travels 300 days a year doing her advocacy and education work.

When an empty parking spot appears before us, many of us would see it for what it is - a place that could be filled with cars and trucks. But to eco-engineer Shubhendu Sharma, it's a space to be planted with trees and turned into a forest.
What's more, he believes these tiny forests can grow anywhere, including our most crowded and polluted cities where they can help maintain clean air and water and provide habitat for animals and insects. “A forest is not an isolated piece of land where animals live together,” says Sharma. “A forest can be a complete part of our urban existence.” Mast of us know just how important trees are to our health and to the planet. Yet millions of hectares of forest are cleared every year due to farming, ranching, logging and construction. The World Wildlife Foundation estimates that 20 percent of the Amazon rainforest and surrounding ecosystems have already been lost.
Inspired by the work of Japanese scientist Akira Miyawaki, Sharma built a forest in the backyard of his family's home in northern India in 2010. He planted 100 young trees in the 75-square-meter plot. They grew and a dozen species of birds cane to check them out. The plantings created welcome shade, and their roots were able to absorb even the abundant monsoon (季风) rains. After a year, he had his own forest. Since then, Sharma has founded a company called Afforestt. It's top priority is to bring back natural forests to places where they no longer exist. So far, Afforestt has planted 144 forests in 45 cities around the world. Sharma has shown you can lake a space the size of six or seven parking spots-and create a forest with 100 trees. Ready to create your own tiny forest? If your answer is yes, let's follow Sharma's 5-step procedures to grow our own forests.
12.Ordinary people may regard a parking spot as a place for ______. A.parking vehicles. C.building houses.
B.planting trees.
D.producing cars and trucks.
13.What does the underlined word “they” refer to in Paragraph 2? A.Cities. C.Air and water.
14.How many trees has Afforestt planted? A.45
B.144
C.224
D.14,400
B.Forests.
D.Animals and insects
15.What will be talked about in the following paragraphs? A.How to create a forest.
B.Why we should plant trees.
7
C.What kind of forest we need. 【答案】 12.A 13.B 14.D 15.A 【分析】
D.Who will follow the steps.
由文章第一段“When you look at a row of empty parking spots, what do you see? Many of us would see it for what it is—a place that could be filled with cars and trucks.(当你看着一排空的停车位时,你会看到什么?我们当中的许多人会看到它本来的样子,即一个可以挤满小汽车和卡车的地方)”可知,普通人会把空着的停车点当作是纯粹停放汽车的场所。故选A项。 13.
词句猜测题。由文章第二段“What's more, he believes these tiny forests can grow anywhere, including our most crowded and polluted cities where they can help maintain clean air and water and provide habitat for animals and insects.(更重要的是,他相信这些小森林可以生长在任何地方,包括我们最拥挤和污染最严重的城市,它们可以帮助保持清洁的空气和水,并为动物和昆虫提供栖息地)”可知,they代指上文出现的复数名词forests。故选B项。 14.
细节理解题。由最后一段“So far, Afforestt has planted 144 forests(到目前为止,Afforestt种植了144片森林)”和“Sharma has shown you can take a space the size of six or seven parking spots—and create a forest with 100 trees.(Sharma表明,你可以占用六七个停车位那么大的空间,也可以种上100棵树)”可知,到目前为止,Afforest已经种了144片树林。每片树林有100棵树,所以Afforestt种了14400棵树。故选D项。 15.

My neighbor was very large a man that I couldn't lift her on my own, so I ran back to call my husband! Together we got him standing, and he was unable to walk. Luckily, a woman, which bicycled by, came to help. She got on a lawn chair from my front yard and we got my neighbor seating. After a few minutes' rest, we sent him home.
